My friend, a Missionary is someone that has been sent by God on a mission. Usually when people say that I am a Missionary they mean that that is their occupation. Like a Pastor or an Evangelist, a Missionary has a Spiritual calling to do a work that God has given him or her to do.
There should always be a Biblical mandate for the work that a missionary seeks to accomplish. Notice what sometimes is referred to as the great Commission in Matthew 28:18-20 18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen
My friend, Jesus is talking to the eleven disciples that were with Him. Remember that Judas at this point had hung himself. This is after the death and resurrection of Jesus. Jesus Commissions His Disciples to go into the entire World (All Nations) and make disciples. In order for someone to be a disciple of the Lord that means they have to be saved and choose to follow the Lord. That is why Jesus tells them to teach others everything that He had taught them.
Jesus tells them to baptize the disciples that would be made because baptism is something that a Christian does to dedicate him or herself to God after Salvation. In a way Jesus was a missionary. He was on a mission from God the Father. He did not do His own will, but the will of the one who sent Him.
The ministry of Jesus is a good example of missions work for us to follow.
He had compassion and love for people.
He protected the weak and defended the Truth.
Paul went on missionary journeys. Paul went to preach and teach the Word of God.
He was an Apostle, which means Sent one.
There are 5 different offices of ministry in the Body of Christ listed in Ephesians 4:8-12 8 Therefore He says: When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men.
Now this, He ascended what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth?
He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.) And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ. My friend, Jesus gave the office of Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Pastor, and Teacher. The office of Missionary is not specifically listed in the Bible as these are. So the work of someone that is a Missionary goes back to what his or her mission is, given in the Word of God and often a burden that God has put in the heart of one of His children to carry out. again We all (That know the Lord) can have a mission and do the work of ministry because God give all His children something to do for Him. So my friend, If you are born again you are not just my friend but also my Brother in Christ. And the LORD will lead you .
